There are a few different spec choices that people take in Arenas. I am personally Beast Mastery because of both playstyle and group synergy.
I run with a Warlock who handles map/player control with CoT, Fear, Coil, Felguard Intercept, and, from time to time, even a Felhunter's Spell Lock (against rare matchups). Because of this, there's a lot less need for me to have Silencing and Scatter Shots to control other players. The DPS output of BM is a lot more steady, with slightly less burst, but our group makeup requires that I be more Steady than Burst DPS to keep pressure on players (our Warrior handles a lot of our Burst).
If we had a Mage instead of a Warlock, I would be Marks for extra control and full three-DPS burst, rather than sustainability and survivability. My spec would change to match the style of the rest of the group. That, or I would stay BM due to playstyle. A Mage would provide another CC with less ways of being broken/prevented, which lets us focus more on DPS and burst, which means I would need to go for more DPS/burst, so I would probably subspec into Marks instead of Survival.
Honestly, I would just say to spec into whatever best fits your playstyle, unless your team absolutely 100% needs you as one or the other. Taking the route that's most comfortable for you is almost always the best decision you can make. If you're not comfortable in PvP, you won't function. There's no such thing as "Making something work;" it either works or it doesn't.

In The Beginning....
Rimmed with wind and storm. Came a blog about Hunters in Arenas.
How's it goin', folks? Treisk here with another blog for Hunters, this time, with a stronger focus on Arenas. This blog will bring perspectives from a few top Hunters, and from the POV of Beast Mastery and Marksmanship. Hell, if I find one, I'll even try to track down a good Survival Hunter, although, admittedly, Survival doesn't work well in Arenas.
Hopefully, this blog will turn into a guide that a lot of Hunters look to, to gain an advantage and learn as much as they can about playing this class in Arenas. I'll start this off the best way I possibly can - The basics.
Bindings, Mouse Turn, The "S" Button
First off, keybindings. My personal recommendation for bindings is to stick with something simple, compact, but comfortable. This is my personal setup that I recommend for absolutely anyone:

Secondary Host:

Using QWEASDZX as hotkeys, moving/turning/jumping with your mouse, having everything hotkeyed that you use in combat, and just having easy access to everything is absolutely KEY to making the most of your character in a PvP venue.
Turning with your mouse is not a matter of "Should I or shouldn't I?" If you're turning with your keyboard, you're not playing the game. Turning with your mouse is 101 Basic, and if you're not doing it, you're not living up to your max potential. This applies to absolutely any player or class.
What is the S button? If you're moving with WASD, what would S do? That's the S button. Don't do it. Unbind S from a movement key, as well as your down arrow and 2 on your number pad. Instead, bind it to an ability, and get in the habit of mouse turning and running forward. It's infinitely faster, and, outside of that, you look like a much better player for doing it that way, because, in fact, making this change improves your gameplay nearly exponentially. You will not regret making this change in your gameplay if you learn it and adapt to it.
Pro players will not have learned much if anything from reading this. These are simply basics. These are the first important, key things you should know before PvPing.
